Moto Q Home Screen

by hilkiah 16. June 2007 05:06

Well, I bit the bullet and finally requested to switch PDA phones for the office. As of yesterday, I've officially moved over to the Moto Q from the PPC-6700. The 6700 was a great device, but the size kept getting on my nerves, especially for I what I use a device like that for - cell calls and email. The Q is proving to be great fit . . . just have to get used to the lack of a touch screen. Voice dialing, however, rocks! I didn't have all of my contacts moved over to it yet, let alone re-configuring my voice tags, but I was still able to use my headset to make calls simply by saying "Call" and then the number. The recognition has been great - only time it hasn't worked was one time outside in the wind.

Other than having issues with getting GoodLink working (The OTA installer fails with a "can't find serial number" message that Good says they are aware of on the Sprint version of the Q and are researching), my biggest complaint was the lack of customization for the home screen. The "Sprint" scheme is by far the best of the pre-installed templates, making the best of the screen real estate. However, it only shows ActiveSync based email. However, I use an IMAP account to track my sdgInteractive mail and I couldn't find a way to show that on the screen. Well, it turns out that with a little XML know-how, you can create your own customized layouts and upload them to the device simply by copying a file! I've only made one with the simple change I wanted, but this could prove something fun to play with . . .
